INFO
Los Osos Grandma's House is located near the eastern shore of Morro Bay on a deep lot protected at the front by a copse of Monterey Cypress trees. The client, a woman living on the property with her son and his young family, wanted independent living while maintaining a connection to her family.
The guest house and its garden become an ad hoc interior lot with the fence and west-facing wall acting as a continuous screen between the two houses. A perforated metal fence with a large sliding gate veils a new private garden. The main house’s board and batten siding is carried to the guest house, but with changes in proportion and scale that create a playful dialogue between the old and new.
Inside, the house is an efficient one-bedroom with a large clerestory at the main space for natural light and ventilation. As a priority for the client, a bathtub with a lightwell and adjacent window connect the space to the outside, providing a bright and serene experience.
